Learn the essentials of TR19 and why regular kitchen ventilation cleaning is key for compliance, safety, and insurance requirements

Understanding TR19

Effective ventilation maintenance protects your kitchen, staff, and business

TR19 is a vital guidance document from BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) that sets the standards for commercial kitchen extraction and duct cleaning. Following TR19 ensures your ventilation system is safe, compliant, and efficient, reducing fire risks, improving air quality, and keeping your kitchen running smoothly.

TR19 requires regular inspections and cleaning of ventilation systems. The frequency depends on the level of use and the type of cooking being carried out. For example:

  • Light use (2-6 hours per day) should be cleaned every 12 months.

  • Moderate use (6-12 hours per day) should be cleaned every 6 months.

  • Heavy use (12-16 hours per day) should be cleaned every 3 months.

After each cleaning, a detailed TR19-compliant report must be provided, documenting the cleanliness of the system and any remedial actions taken. This report is essential for compliance and should be kept as part of your records.

Why is TR19 Compliance Important?

To ensure compliance with TR19, schedule regular inspections and professional cleaning of your kitchen extraction systems. If you’re unsure about the status of your system, our qualified team can assess it, provide a competitive quote, and recommend the necessary actions to keep your system fully compliant.

Safety: The buildup of grease and debris in extraction systems can act as fuel for a fire, posing a significant risk to staff, customers, and the business. Adhering to TR19 helps prevent fire incidents and ensures a safer working environment.

Insurance: Many insurance policies require evidence of TR19 compliance. Failure to adhere to these standards could result in a claim being denied if a fire were to occur.

Legal Compliance: Non-compliance with TR19 regulations can result in legal repercussions, including fines and legal action.

Efficiency & Longevity: Regular cleaning and maintenance as per TR19 guidelines improve the efficiency of your extraction systems, reducing energy costs and extending the lifespan of the equipment.

How Can We Help?

As a current member of BESA, we have undergone and passed BESA's auditing process and are subject to ongoing audits to maintain this membership.

Following a free site survey, we can utilize advanced cleaning equipment, including rotary brushes and decarbonisers, to ensure that your system is thoroughly cleaned to meet TR19 standards, regardless of its complexity.

After our visit, we provide a comprehensive TR19-compliant report that includes grease measurements, recommendations, pre and post clean photographs, a site schematic, and a suggested cleaning schedule.
